Why You Should Include Komodo in Your Indonesia Itinerary

If you're planning a trip to Indonesia, it’s easy to think about places like Bali or Jakarta first. But if you’re looking for something memorable and a bit more adventurous, you should definitely consider adding Komodo to your itinerary. I’d recommend it especially if you like nature, the ocean, and a bit of quiet.

Komodo is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, and it’s known for the famous Komodo dragons—the largest lizards on Earth. Seeing them in their natural habitat is something you don’t get to do every day. It’s exciting, but also a bit humbling, especially as you watch these massive reptiles move calmly across the dry land.

But Komodo isn’t just about the dragons. The area has some of the clearest blue waters and richest marine life you’ll ever see. Even if you’re not an expert swimmer or snorkeler, the waters here are calm in many spots and great for beginners. You’ll see all kinds of colorful fish, coral, and maybe even manta rays. There are many boat tours that take you around the nearby islands, let you snorkel from the boat, and give you time to relax on white or pink sand beaches.

Speaking of beaches, the famous Pink Beach is something you won’t forget. The sand really does have a pinkish color because of crushed red coral, and the contrast with the turquoise water is beautiful. It's a peaceful place to sit for a while, enjoy the view, and just slow down.

Most people stay in the town of Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores and take day trips from there. The town has enough places to eat, sleep, and grab a coffee, but it still feels relaxed and friendly—not overly touristy.

Including Komodo in your Indonesia trip adds something different. It’s a place where wildlife, ocean life, and quiet natural beauty all come together. Whether you’re into wildlife, sunsets from a boat, or just want to try something new, Komodo won’t disappoint. It’s the kind of place that leaves you with stories you’ll probably tell for years.
